Safer POD® devices deployed in Darlington to tackle retail crime

Two Safer POD® devices have been installed in Darlington town centre, offering real-time monitoring and a strong visible deterrent to potential offenders.

A successful trial in the town helped inform the decision to bring in further Safer POD® devices.

The effectiveness of the Safer POD® was evident in a marked reduction of retail crime like anti-social behaviour and theft. This included the complete eradication of shoplifting incidents in some locations.

The devices, introduced to support Durham Constabulary after an investment by Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Joy Allen, will play a vital role within a wider strategy to reduce shoplifting and improve public safety, especially in high-footfall retail zones.

“The impact of these devices was phenomenal during the trial, and undoubtedly improved confidence among retailers and shopworkers, who are often victims of crime themselves due to abuse, violence and threats to their safety in-store."

PCC Joy Allen has emphasised a necessary focus on growing retail crime as a priority within her revised Police, Crime and Justice plan.

Within this, there are plans for further Safer PODs to be installed in other areas controlled by Durham Constabulary in the following months.
