Protecting Tesco with 24/7 Monitoring

Background

Safer Group provides 24/7 remote monitoring and incident management across a network of key Tesco locations including retail storefronts, car parks, and fuel stations in the UK.

Our services combine advanced analytics with human-led monitoring to ensure the safety of customers, staff, and property across multiple high-footfall Tesco stores and their immediate surrounds.

Goal

The primary objective was to enhance Tesco’s situational awareness of potential crime and reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour (ASB), theft, and vandalism, while maintaining constant operational visibility.

The solution also needed to integrate seamlessly with Tesco’s own Security HUB and established escalation procedures, ensuring a consistent response framework.

Challenges

Tesco sites experience high visitor turnover and varied risk profiles, requiring precise, location-specific monitoring that is bespoke to the problems that each store could be suffering from. Common challenges that Tesco experience include:

  • Large car meets and anti-social gatherings causing disruption and safety risk.

  • Consistent incidents of begging and rough sleeping around store entrances.

  • Theft and fuel-related offences in 24-hour forecourt areas.

  • Difficulties in coordinating communications between multiple stakeholders: store security, management, police, and local authorities.

Solution

Safer Group’s monitoring centre operates 24/7, performing continuous CCTV patrols and analytics-led detection.

When activity is detected, alerts are triaged by Safer’s operators, who then escalate in line with Tesco’s protocols.

Incident reports are subsequently distributed to the store security and management teams, Tesco’s own Security HUB and, where appropriate, the police or the council.

What is an incident report?

Our analytics generate detailed incident records, which include detailed descriptions of alarm procedures and other informative data like vehicle registrations, repeat-offender imagery, and behavioural mapping. An incident report is shared with all stakeholders in the wake of an incident, supporting long-term case-building for local authorities and the police, assisting them in identifying offenders.

How it works

The system was integrated into Tesco’s existing physical infrastructure without any interruption or downtime to store operations.

Any escalation procedures were agreed with – and tailored to – each specific store, while automated reporting ensured speedy notifications, followed by our comprehensive incident reporting.

The collaboration between Safer Group’s operators, Tesco’s in-house teams, and the police / councils, established a consistent and transparent communication loop.
