Safer Group was commissioned to deliver a 24/7 monitored perimeter protection system for the former RAF Scampton base, covering a perimeter exceeding 8km and a total area of approximately 300 hectares.
A hybrid approach was implemented, combining on-site patrol officers for the inner zone with remote Safer Group monitoring covering the external perimeter.
The main objective was to protect both the outer and inner boundaries of a large, sensitive site with minimal human presence. Therefore, the base needed:
Continuous surveillance of the entire perimeter with no downtime.
Early detection of potential intrusions, before reaching the much higher-security inner area.
Full integration between the Safer Group Control Room, on-site patrols, and MOD Police response units.
The site’s 8km perimeter and rural location presented unique monitoring difficulties due to a limited communications infrastructure, and an important need for coordinated response between remote monitoring and the on-site security.
Maintaining visibility across large open terrain with changing environmental conditions also posed a significant challenge for our team.

The external perimeter was protected by Safer POD® devices, equipped with intelligent analytics to detect intrusion activity before reaching the restricted internal area.

Notifications are then issued to on-site security before patrols intervene.
Live camera feeds are available to both the Safer Control Room and the on-site team, ensuring coordinated escalation when it is needed.

The system was deployed in phases to ensure uninterrupted perimeter coverage and no downtime.
All devices were networked into the Safer Group monitoring centre, where operators maintain constant oversight of perimeter.
Regular communication is maintained via multiple secure channels, providing on-site officers with accurate situational data before they arrive at an incident location.
Since undertaking the project, we have captured all intrusions into the external perimeter, significantly reducing risk to internal security areas.
Ensuring seamless coordination between remote and on-site security teams has been vital for the success of the project thus far.
Furthermore, any situational data and evidence detected by Safer Group’s monitoring team has quickly been sent to the MOD Police for further analysis and logging.
