Celebrating women in security on International Women’s Day

At Safer Group, we are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day 2025 by shining a spotlight on the incredible women who contribute to the security industry.

Security has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated field, but every day, women across our company -and the wider sector- challenge outdated perceptions and prove that security is for everyone.

To mark this occasion, we asked our female colleagues to share their experiences, thoughts, and advice on working in security.

Their responses highlight the diverse paths that led them here, the evolving perception of women in the industry, and their hopes for the future.

A career in security could begin by being enticed to the industry by advancements in technology and the opportunity to be part of an evolving sector.

“I believe in the power of technology, and I want to ensure it's used for good.”

Another respondent shared, "I have a fascination for technology and innovation. I have been fortunate enough to receive opportunities for career growth and the industry will continue to offer me the challenge I seek in a job".

For one, a major news story drove them toward security, with a desire to make a difference following tragic events. Another found themselves in security after looking for a career that provided structure and progression.

A study from Statista shows that in 2024 women make up approximately 11% of the UK security workforce, while 17.9% of women make up the UK cybersecurity workforce.

These figures are steadily increasing as more organisations recognise the value of a diverse workforce.

The perception of women in security can be deemed to be shifting, however this can be happening at different speeds depending on the sector.

Most of our respondents were optimistic: "I’ve met some incredible women in this industry who hold senior positions, and they have the utmost respect and trust, which is hugely encouraging.

Others felt the industry can still improve. Mentions of a “boys club” mentality persist, while one noted “Traditionally, when people hear the word 'security' they associate it with a bouncer on a door that won't let you in."

There is so much more to it than that - CCTV, cybersecurity, emergency response, defence, disaster and risk management etc.”

While progress is evident, there will always still work to be done to break old stereotypes and ensure more women have access to the vast array of roles on offer.

Another respondent added, "It’s a hard industry to break, so just have the attitude that whatever anyone else does, you can do better."

For many, the key to success lies in perseverance, finding allies, and being unapologetically yourself.

As one respondent put it: "Really cliché, but don’t be afraid to be yourself within this industry-don’t minimise your experience or character."
